We are a non-sheltered program. We work closely with our local animal control and pull as many dogs and cats as possible from the pound each week to adopt out, foster or transfer to no-kill shelters in Northern Virginia. Our two main focuses are spay/neuter and community education, and of course, saving as many lives as possible via adoption, foster or transport. We rely solely on volunteers. Our Board of Directors consist solely of volunteers as well. All of our funds go into our spay/neuter program, veterinary costs such as vaccines and testing for FIV and other contagions, fuel and upkeep on our transport vehicle, and the various bills associated with running a volunteer based rescue.
We rely solely on donations from our community and the kindness of one local vets that give us discounted fees for spay/neuter, vet checks, vaccinations and care . Our only mode of transportation to take our animals to safety out of county is a minivan donated by one of these vets several years ago. In this we make weekly transport runs 3-4 hours northward and smaller runs all week to closer counties and shelters. We hold several adopt-a-thons each month in the spring and summer and during these we also provide information and education to all those that stop by. We also ensure that we always have a booth or table at county functions to provide education and offers of help to spay/neuter.
We create as many fund raising events each year as time and community support will allow.
We keep careful records of every animal pulled from the shelter, adopted, fostered, or transported. Follow up is always done on each and every one to ensure its placement and continued safety.
In 2016 we pulled a total of 255 cats and 432 dogs from our local animal pound. All these animals were vet checked, spayed/neutered, and given first and second vaccinations including rabies if needed. A great majority of these would have been euthanized had we not been able to take them. This total does not include cats and dogs we rescued from other locations and owner surrenders to us.
